In the time it takes you to watch this video, thousands of smartphones will have been bought around the world. A saturated market like this makes it tough for manufacturers to stand out. Sometimes they develop awesome new functionality or gorgeous designs to tempt us into parting with our cash. Sometimes the rush to innovate and differentiate makes them go a bit crazy and create something distinctly strange. While the era of phones with unique and sometimes downright wild features ended with the transition to the mostly homogeneous smartphone, there are still handset makers out there that dare to experiment. From phones capable seemingly bending the laws of physics, through ones that can project stuff on walls, down to odd phones that incorporate a Geiger counter of sorts to detect radiation, it's fair to say that the adventurous among us can still get their hands on something completely unique. 0:08 - Nokia 7280 0:28 - Toshiba G450 0:48 - Nokia 7600 1:08 - Samsung SPH-N270 1:28 - Samsung Serenata 1:48 - Nokia N-Gage 2:08 - Siemens Xelibri 2:28 - Nokia N90 2:48 - Bang & Olufsen Serene 3:08 - Nokia 5510 3:28 - Motorola Aura 3:48 - Samsung X830 4:08 - Nokia 3250 4:28 - Compulab Exeda 4:48 - Caterpillar S61 5:08 - Blackberry Passport 5:28 - Motorola Flipout 5:48 - Huawei Enjoy 7 Plus KFC 6:08 - Vertu Signature Touch 6:28 - Red Hydrogen One 6:48 - Lenovo Cplus 7:08 - Google Project ARA 7:28 - Marshall London 7:48 - Samsung Galaxy Beam 8:08 - YotaPhone - Subscribe now - Find this video helpful in any way? This TikToker Is Documenting the Coolest Phones From 2000s Pop Culture

TikTok content
This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.
Eros Ana Orion was born in 2002 and yet, the student and TikTok creator is fascinated with the tech used in that time, especially the ones that made their mark in pop culture. On her TikTok @oriononline, which boasts over 45,000 followers, she tracks down defunct gadgets and explains her finds in detail. In one instance, the 20-year-old found the phone that Fergie used in the “Glamorous” (2006) music video: a hard-to-see T9 LG 2006 enV (VX9900). In another clip, Orion shows off a Nokia 3250 phone that Rihanna uses in her “SOS” (2005) music video (one of the phone’s features is that the bottom half twists around.) Orion also has delved into the history of Dior luxury phones—while wearing a pair of futuristic hulking sunglasses that take up almost half her face—and explored the history of Beyoncé’s long-forgotten collaboration with Samsung in 2007.
Part of Orion’s obsession with turn-of-the-millenium cellphones and CD players—as well as the fashion that went with it—stemmed from day-dreaming about what it would be like as a noughties teenager to toy with Y2K tech. “I wanted to see how people were connecting with the culture at that time,” she says. “I was like, ‘If I was a teenager in 1997 or 2004, how would I go about sharing my life?’” One specific celebrity that led her to start researching was Pharrell, who carried a cellphone in every interview or paparazzi photo from the early 2000s. “I actually have a timeline of every phone Pharrell has owned from 2001 to 2009. After 2009, it is just iPhones,” she says. (That timeline is documented in one of her TikToks.)
To research, Orion digs into old catalogs on archive.org, which allows users to see now-defunct websites and entries. She also will go to phone manufacturer websites, like Nokia’s, where they have recorded every phone that they’ve ever released.
Orion’s sense of style is influenced by her obsession. “I’m always thinking about the man versus machine concept. I never want to feel dominated by these things I own,” she says. “I feel like when I put them on, I’m reaffirming the fact that we give these things purpose, we give them functionality.” In one of her TikToks, Orion shows four different ways to wear earbuds—coiling them around her pigtails, and tying them around her neck like a choker necklace. She’ll clip an Apple watch to her visor or wear a headset simply as a decorative accessory. Orion often sports her keyboard tank top, which she made herself.

My first camera and its evolution
By mentioning first, what I meant was a series of firsts. As there were a number of firsts for different camera forms; mobile phones, instant cameras, disposable cameras, SLRS and DSLRs. We’ll start with what I consider a toy-cam , my first Polaroid, the iZone instant pocket camera, It was a gift from my uncle. The reason why I considered it to be a toy-cam is that its targeted consumers were normally kids, the way it was designed even resembles of a toy, very plasticky, light and “funky”, yeah, a term that was popularised in the early 2000s. It was every “cool kid” starter pack. This also meant that I wasn’t really taking it seriously, I shot blindly just for fun as the film can then be turned into an arm candy, as the film was designed to be a wristband. It gives the same sensation of photos you take in a photo booth you could find in places back in the early 2000s, quirky and fun.
As I mentioned in my previous post, my first camera was the one from my Nokia 3250 and then a series of iPhones from the 4s up til my current phone, which is the iPhone 7 Plus. The iPhone 7 Plus offered me features close to what a DSLR could do, with apps like LightRoom, and FilmicPro, I could turn my phone into a manual camera. Minus, the sharp quality of the lens DSLRs have of course, but it is still sufficient for me. I am a firm believer of the term “it’s not the tool, it’s the person behind it”. I am not a pro photographer myself, but I could say I have a fair share of decent and memorable pictures in my personal Instagram page. For me, what matters the most is the composition of your image. When you snap a photo, you have to consider the rule of thirds, perspective, lighting, the subject placement and to play with your creativity, it’s more than just a click; it is a form of story-telling, just like as how you would paint a picture. A person can have the world’s best camera, but without passion, creativity and knowledge I believe the outcome can still look boring.
The long-awaited answer you’re looking for, my first film camera, The Canon BF 800. I got this camera for a very good deal. I was fortunate that my dad’s friend was clearing off his shelves to make more space for his display area in his shop. He had about six compact cameras, 2 model 600 polaroids and one SLR on the shelf. I always had my eyes on it, the cameras were there for about a good twenty years as I recall, and as I mentioned in my previous post, I was always contemplating to buy. Finally, back in June, I had the urge to ask my dad to call his friend for the cameras and so my dad gave him a call, and his friend laughed at it when we asked how much is he willing to sell us the cameras. “What for? Why do you need it? Are you building a museum? Nobody buys these cameras anymore, they don’t work” he replied with laughter, and the moment I was waiting for, he mentioned his price, “Take lah, $5 each, and $10 for each of the Polaroid”. I couldn’t believe it when I heard that from him, I knew I had struck a “Steal” offer. I immediately went to his shop and cleaned his shelf, but he wasn’t going to let go of the Canon EOS 300, the actual camera I always had my eyes on. So I asked him, begged him for him to let go of that one too, but he refused too, he probably has some sentimental value for it or he just believes that as a lucky charm I don’t know, he was very firm with his answer and he said he would only sell it to me for the actual price tag that was on that camera for the last twenty years, which was $1088.00 , and I wasn’t going to pay for that, I know I could get a better camera for that price, like the Contax T2, or get myself a decent medium format camera, a Mamiya RB/RZ 67. I gave up the chase and just went home with my precious gems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cameras I got from the “steal” deal.
The first thing I did was call up my friend Adam, showed him the cameras and asked if he could check it out for me, if everything was working perfectly. They were display sets, logically they should be fine, unfortunately I was wrong, only 1 out of 6 compact cameras I got worked. I was already so excited, that I was somehow sitting on a gold mine. The Canon BF 800 is my first compact film camera, and I had a good run with it until I had another offer and sold it to get myself an Olympus MJU II 140 Zoom. I actually made $90 profit from it. That’s not too bad I guess, plus the Olympus MJU 140 zoom is great camera, it’s fast, it’s sharp and it offered a ridiculous amount of zoom, great for travelling. Most people don’t really like the zoom features in a compact camera, but then it is a personal preference, I like it because I get to compose my subjects in a certain manner, like manually cropping out what isn’t relevant to the image I want to capture.
Tumblr media
The hunt wasn’t over, I keep on going to “old” shops and asked if they had anything considered as trash I could salvage as my treasure, and I found a few, but they were really trash, most of them don’t work, or some parts were just missing. You don’t want that in a compact camera, always look for tell-tale signs of potential breakdowns and that’s the risk you have to take when investing in one, considering most of them are made of plastic and how old they are, problems like the winder gear being stuck or it just falling apart are very common. I recommend buying of from your friends, and or someone that is credible, a recently used camera is very good choice as it is sort of guarantee to work. After a few more impulsive purchases, I still feel a void. I still didn’t get “the one”, I mean not that the compact cameras weren’t good, I just wanted something that is more “serious”, I wanted an SLR. The Canon EOS 300 was still haunting me, but I am not foolish enough to pay for that kind of money, so I went on a search on Facebook, and just like it was fate, the first post I saw was an advert for a Nikon F2, it was in a mint condition, it had a really clear vintage look 1.4 50mm lens and the original Nikon leather case. It was good as new, and one thing about me is, I LOVE 70s aesthetics, The F2 being a camera made in 1972 was an instant yes for me. Followed by a number of Youtube review videos, I was convinced, this is the camera for me. I purchased it for $400, which is less than what I could have spent on that EOS 300. Unfortunately, as I mentioned in my earlier post, I haven’t got the chance to fully experience and work with the camera due to covid. Here are some shots I managed to take with the F2 back in July:
